Chapter 16

Gaurdia Homestead, Xima

The rear hatch to the Anniversary lowered while Taft and Kaytha walked out from the cargo bay and into the light of day. Ven and Jebet were still on the flight deck busy powering down the systems on the freighter. Ven thought it best to let the ship cool down from its most recent journey with no plans to travel anywhere soon.

Taft walked to the right of Kaytha and placed his hand on his wife’s back, sensing and hoping to comfort her unease. As they passed the natural flat top rock formations that served as the family’s T-Craft landing pads, Kaytha began to sob. She stopped next to the rock where Luna’s ship was typically parked, lowering her head, tears streaming from her eyes.

“We’ll find her. We’re going to fix this, I promise,” said Taft.

Kaytha’s head shot up, her eyes water-filled and red, her cheeks wet and flush. “Don’t you promise that! You don’t know that! Don't you dare make promises like that!” Kaytha screamed, then began sobbing even harder. She pulled her arms in close and leaned forward into Taft’s chest, burying her face into his shirt as she continued to cry. Taft wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight. “I’m sorry,” Kaytha said through her cries, “I just...I just want our baby back home safe.”

Ven and Jebet were now standing on the grass just outside the open rear of the Anniversary, letting the couple have their moment.

Suddenly everyone’s attention was drawn to the skies out beyond the hilltop plateau of the homestead. A T-Craft was approaching, its thrusters roaring. It was Torian, her XT-Craft slowing in the sky, the lift manifolds glowing a brilliant purple as the landing gear extended down. Torian Sigel was now a level 9 flight officer for the Envoy Flight Force. Given the relatively young average age of the majority of pilots, General Fond Tama had requested she join up. Torian was well skilled as a pilot and served as a mentor for many novice females within the EFF at the age of thirty-five. Plus, she loved the opportunity to have her own official XT-Starfighter.

The distraction of seeing her friend was just what Kaytha needed to gather herself together, pulling away from Taft and wiping her eyes. Taft smiled and kissed her on the forehead, knowing there wasn’t anything he could do right now to help his wife and pleased that her best friend was here.

Setting her ship down between the hovels and the Anniversary, Torian opened the cockpit canopy, removed her flight helmet, placing it on the pilot’s seat, and climbed down the side to a waiting Kaytha. The two women had become close friends, and Kaytha considered her to be a mentor to her daughter. As they embraced one another, Torian said, “She’s going to be fine.”

Kaytha started to cry slightly again as Jebet and Ven walked over to join them.

Waiting for the two of them to separate from their hug, Ven asked, “Is it true? What we heard about Psyche? We just now saw the alert pop up on the OverAir feed.
